Hourly Rates vs. Word Count Rates
Many editors charge a rate per word when editing manuscripts. I've chosen not to do so for two reasons. First, it usually costs much less for a client to pay my hourly rate. Second, charging a rate per word does not allow for the differences in time it takes to edit different work. Depending on a client's wishes and the level of editing needed for a given manuscript, a single page can take as little as a few minutes or more than an hour. Charging by the word fails to take this into account. Since clients always have a binding estimate of my time before I begin editing, you'll never be taken by surprise by being charged more than you agreed.
